Bungie will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 on June 9. Called Monument of Triumph, it arrives as the studio winds down active development on the game and starts work on its next ones.
The game itself stays playable. Bungie says it will keep Destiny 2 running, just as the original Destiny is today, and that many changes in the final update are meant to make the game a welcoming place to return to. In its announcement on Bungie.net, the studio wrote that after almost twelve years in the Destiny universe, it was time for Destiny "to live beyond Destiny 2."
Bungie's post names no reason beyond its change of focus.
What the final update adds
Monument of Triumph will be available to all players on June 9. Its centerpiece is the Monument itself: Legendary Marks return and are earned by completing Triumphs, Destiny 2's in-game challenges, across the whole game. They unlock free armor ornaments, accessories and weapon engrams. Players who complete a wide variety of Triumphs can also earn an extra title and armor ornament set.
The Director comes back as the center of activities. Bungie says it took on board player feedback about the Director and the Portal, and activities from the Portal stay available through nodes at the bottom of the Director.
A new Pantheon also arrives as a permanent addition, with a fresh set of bosses. The first bosses open on June 9, a full gauntlet with every boss encounter in one activity follows on June 13, and rotating single-boss encounters for rewards start on June 16.
Sparrow Racing League returns as a permanent addition, reopening tracks from the original Destiny. It adds a new space to race on, plus a new weapon set, armor and cosmetics as rewards.
Hunter, Titan and Warlock get new abilities, including new Aspects (options that customize a subclass), a new Hunter melee and new grenades. In the Crucible, Destiny's PvP mode, a new gunplay-focused Arena playlist joins the rotation. Iron Banner and Trials move to a fixed rotation, with Trials running on weekends when Iron Banner is not, and Heavy Metal returns with a third vehicle type, the Cabal Walker.
Older gear gets attention too. Bungie says raid, dungeon and destination weapons and armor are being updated to modern standards, and weekly featured raids and dungeons return. Players will also be able to apply armor ornaments to Exotic armor from June 9 and see them in PvE. The rewards pass, which Bungie says was originally planned for Shadow and Order, carries a new Exotic hand cannon and more cosmetics. Bungie's announcement has the full list, including changes to Exotics, the Portal and Gambit.
What goes away
Seasonal events are being retired. Weapon rewards from Festival of the Lost, The Dawning, Guardian Games and Solstice can instead be earned through engrams from a Monument of Triumph vendor.
All content packs in one bundle
Bungie is also bundling all Destiny 2 content packs into a single purchase, Destiny 2: The Collection, available on June 9. It includes the campaigns, dungeon keys and the 30th Anniversary Pack, among others. Individual packs and expansions get permanent markdowns in June. Bungie's post does not mention a price.
Bungie says it will publish weekly breakdowns of the update until launch. The This Week in Destiny blog continues for a few weeks after June 9, then goes into what the studio calls hibernation. Bungie says it will keep in touch through its website, social media and Discord, and that players will be the first to know when it has more news on Destiny.
