Bethesda has confirmed that remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development, but it gave no release dates yet. The same note, published July 17, says Fallout 5 is in preproduction and that Obsidian is working on a new Fallout project.
The note comes from Bethesda Game Studios and follows Xbox's layoffs by less than two weeks. PC Gamer puts those cuts at 3,200 jobs. Bethesda does not mention them directly.
Two older games get a remaster
Fallout 3 came out in 2008 and Fallout: New Vegas in 2010. A remaster is an updated version of an existing game, and Bethesda has not said what will change in these two. It says only that it knows many players want to revisit earlier Fallout games and that it has been working on remasters of both.
There are no dates, and VGC notes that no screenshots or gameplay have been shown. The note also does not say which studio is building them. Oblivion Remastered, by comparison, was revealed and released on the same day in April 2025.
I'm most curious who builds the New Vegas version, since Obsidian developed the original.
Obsidian is working on a new Fallout game
Bethesda confirmed that Obsidian is working with it on a new Fallout project, which matches a report from earlier this month. There is no title, platform or date yet, and Bethesda says it will share more later.
PC Gamer reads the wording as an entry outside the numbered games, the way New Vegas was. That is the outlet's reading, not something Bethesda said.
Fallout 5 is still early
Fallout 5 is in preproduction, the early planning phase before full development. Bethesda describes it as its "long-range destination". The Elder Scrolls VI is the studio's primary focus, and most of the team is working on it. Both games are being built on Creation Engine 3, a shared technology platform Bethesda has developed since Starfield launched.
According to NME, Todd Howard said in 2022 that Fallout 5 would come after The Elder Scrolls VI.
More Fallout on the way
Bethesda also confirmed an unscripted Fallout Shelter TV project with Amazon Studios and Kilter Films, without a date. The only Fallout item with a timeframe is Raven Rock, a major Fallout 76 expansion planned for 2027 that tells a prequel story to Fallout 3.
