Ubisoft has announced Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake, a rebuild of the 1999 strategy classic planned for 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The reveal came during gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25.
The game will also be playable with a Ubisoft+ subscription. According to Inven Global, Ubisoft's studios in Chengdu and Shanghai are developing it. Ubisoft has not given a release date more specific than 2027.
Visuals and gameplay
The biggest change is the camera. The original used a fixed 2D isometric view, which the remake replaces with a 3D world and a free camera. Ubisoft rebuilt the game in its Snowdrop engine and lists dynamic lighting, real-time weather, and shifting seasons among the upgrades.
The core stays put. Ubisoft describes the same mix of turn-based strategy, RPG-style hero progression, and tactical grid combat. New planning and decision-making tools are meant to make the game more intuitive.
I'm most curious how the grid battles feel with a free camera, since that combat is the heart of Heroes III.
Story and content
Queen Catherine calls on you to join her crusade to restore order to Erathia, which has been torn apart by her father's assassination and invading factions. The remake includes the entire continent of the original game, both expansions (Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death), all original campaigns, and the classic factions.
Ubisoft has woven the story into one continuous experience. A new prologue campaign is meant to ease players into the game, and there will be new cinematics. The remake also gets a modern audio system with voice acting, layered tracks, and ambient sound effects.
Multiplayer and community maps
Up to eight players can play online, with improved matchmaking and a simultaneous turn system, so players take their turns at the same time. The local multiplayer mode Hot Seat returns as well.
Fan-made content comes along too. Ubisoft says the remake will work with the thousands of maps and campaigns players have created over the years, from day one. Updated editor tools and a new in-game hub are meant to make it easier to find, download, and share community content.
The original arrives on Steam
On the same day, Ubisoft released Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete Edition on Steam. Ubisoft says it is the first time the complete version of the original game has been available on the platform. Steam already carried the HD Edition of Heroes III.
Ubisoft is asking players to wishlist the remake on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC through the Ubisoft Store, Steam, or the Epic Games Store.
