In Hungry Horrors, Folklore Monsters Get a Taste for Traditional Dishes

·

The full version of Hungry Horrors is set to launch on Steam on October 13, taking the deckbuilding adventure out of Early Access. Made by UK-based, two-person studio Clumsy Bear Studio, the game turns battles with creatures from British and Irish folklore into a test of culinary strategy.

Players guide a princess through a kingdom under a ravenous curse. Instead of attacking its monsters, known as Horrors, she has to feed them before they reach her. Each card is a traditional dish, and matching a creature’s cravings with the right flavors can build combos and keep the encounter under control.

The studio says the 1.0 release will include eight biomes, 34 folklore-inspired Horrors, 62 dishes and 13 legendary characters. It will also add the complete story and two ways to play: Campaign, a story-driven roguelite mode, and Banquet, a shorter, tougher roguelike mode. The game will be Steam Deck Verified at launch.

The food-and-folklore premise gives the deckbuilder a clear identity: its monsters aren’t simply targets to defeat, but characters whose appetites players have to learn. Dishes draw on real recipes from Britain and Ireland, while the creatures and other characters come from regional legends.

Hungry Horrors launches October 13 on Steam. The store page also offers a free demo.
