Valve's new Steam Controller went on sale on Steam today for $99 (99€), and the first wave of stock is already gone. According to TheGamer, the page went live a few minutes before the announced 10 a.m. Pacific Time start, and by around 10:30 a.m. that first wave had sold out. By late morning, the store page showed an out-of-stock button where the buy button used to be.
The Steam Controller is the successor to Valve's original controller from 2015. Valve showed the new one in November 2025, together with the console-like Steam Machine and the Steam Frame VR headset. Neither of those two has a release date yet, so the controller is the first of the three to arrive.
The controller has two magnetic thumbsticks, which Valve says are designed for long-term reliability. According to PC Gamer, it also has two large trackpads with haptic feedback, alongside the usual buttons and triggers.
Valve says the battery can last 35+ hours of gameplay. The controller comes with a small dock called the Puck, which provides the wireless connection and charges the controller when you click it on magnetically. Bluetooth and USB work too.
It works with any device that runs Steam, including Windows, Mac and Linux PCs and the Steam Deck. Valve says it is also designed for the upcoming Steam Machine and Steam Frame. Valve sells it on Steam in the US, Canada, the UK, the EU and Australia. In Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the distributor Komodo Station handles sales.
Prices differ by region, with distribution costs, import duties and tariffs among the reasons Valve gives. PC Gamer's Andy Edser called the $99 (99€) price tag higher than he had hoped but lower than he expected.
The quick sellout could mean strong interest, a small first batch, or limited production capacity. Valve has not said how many units it had or when more will ship.
